The Library in former Falknov was founded after 1945 from donations of various institutions and supporters. It didn't often have easy times when it undergone periods of moving and we could not say that there was always paid attention to its interests.
From the Municipal Library which served only the citizens of Sokolov it became the library with a district force in 1951. In 1961 it was moved into the Sokolov Castle which was being reconstructed that time and it was the reason the services for readers were limited. Since 1970 the District Library of Sokolov started its work as the central library for public libraries in the district.
During a modernization of the library which was under way from 1975 to 1978 all its services were provided in alternative rooms. In the first period the Department for children and youth was built, reading room, store rooms and the toilets. During next periods the Department for teenagers and administrative rooms were modernized.
In the beginning of 90ths the district library started buying computer technique. By the end of the year 1993 it purchased the first modules of an automated library system LANius. Lending books by means of that system started on June 22nd, 1995 in the Department for adults and for children. The reading room used the system since February 1996. In July 2005 the library switched to the Windows version LANius - Clavius.
On July 1st, 1997 the Library joined the District Museum of Sokolov and the single organization of the District Museum and Library of Sokolov was founded. As the consequence of economic arrangements, above two branches of the library were canceled: the first one - for adults in Sokolovska Street and the second one - for children in Alsova Street. Then in October an Internet was provided accessible for public.
In 2000 the Library and the Museum were divided into two organizations again and since October 1st, 2000 the District Library of Sokolov started to work as a separate organization.
In the end of 2002 the Library has got another 3 PCs with an Internet access for public from the grant of Ministry of Culture.
Since January 1st, 2003, when the State Districts came to an end, the Library was transferred to Sokolov town and it has become the Municipal Library Sokolov. The Karlovy Vary Regional Library has authorized it with regional functions for the public libraries in the area of the former Sokolov district.
In December 2004 a new department of the Library was opened - the Department for the blind and the poor sight ("sound library"). The Library obtained a grant from programs of Ministry of Culture "Public informational services of libraries" and "The Library of 21st Century". The Sokolov town contributed 50 000 CZK.
At present there are 11 PCs for public in the Library / 2 in the Study room, 5 in the Reading room and 4 in the Children's department/. The public can use Internet access, MS WORD and EXCEL. The Library organizes informative and literary programs for kindergartens and basic schools and various cultural events, e.g., at the occasion of "The Month of Internet", "The Week of the Libraries"or lectures and forums for public.
